Treatment for ITP?

Postby sassychops » Thu May 20, 2010 10:11 am

Hello, I have been diagnosed with ITP which is bacsically a low platelet count. I have been on a course of Prednisolone steroids but they seem to have not helped much. We are now weaning me off them but the doctors are looking at removing my spleen. I just wanted to know if there is any worth in trying acupuncture? I also wonder if it is ok to have acupuncture with a low platelet level as it means I would bruise easily? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I'm still not a graduated chinese medicine specialist, I'm just a student right now, but being a patient myself of Chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura , I think I can apport my 2 cents here.
In my case it was immune, not idiopathic, my platelets were attacked by my immune system, confusing the platelets with a virus, platelets are send to the spleen for destruction.
So i was not with a low platelet count all the time, just when a virus hit me and the immune system was activated.

My doctor recommend me to remove my spleen, because the platelets are killed there, I never agreed. its like removing your head to avoid headaches, or something similar.
By that time I did not knew how important is to have a spleen and all the functions it have on the body, thanks God I did not agreed to the surgery.

I went to another doctor, a university professor, very respected one, and he told me NOT to remove my spleen, that removing the spleen is only indicated for very old people which there's no other alternative to fix the low platelet count, that for me(age 16 by that time) was not needed because the condition is just part of the inmaturity of the immune system, and that with time the immune system will mature and the condition will cease.
Well it did, I'm 35 now and the conditon dissapeared like in 8 years. in those 8 years episodes were like 1 every 1 1/2- 2 years, untill it never happened again.
The worst time wast the first 3 times, then each time was less agressive. I went down to 2,000. immunogammaglobulin was what they administered me in the hospital and worked great to rise the platelets.

So, if yours is immune and not idiopathic, you can benefit from my story.
Anyway, I think chinese medicine can help you greatly by balancing and tonifying your blood and immune system.
The needles are extemely fine and I do not think you will have problems, also there are good herbs for ITP.

Hope this helps somehow.
