Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment for Low Back Pain

Overview:

Invasion of cold and/or damp - As with the invasion of wind-cold in the neck, this is a generalised description and overlaps with many presentations of the other acute syndromes described.

TCM Description:

Stagnation of qi and blood in low back (Bladder and Du meridians) caused by an invasion of cold and/or damp.

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Pain - in the lower back, can radiate into buttocks and legs.
  • A heavy sensation in the low back.
  • Restricted range of movement.
  • A history of exposure to cold/damp.

Treatment:

  • Disperse the cold and damp.
  • Invigorate the circulation of qi in the Bladder meridian.
  • Acupuncture - Local points - Yaoyangguan (DU3), Dachangshu (UB25).
    Acupuncture - Distal points - Feiyang (UB58), Weizhong (UB40), Fengfu (DU16).
  • Massage - Deep and invigorating.
  • Moxa - Over Shenshu (UB23) and Yaoyangguan (DU3).
