REN4 (Conception Vessel 4) - Acupuncture Point Information

Chinese Name: Guanyuan
English Name: Gate/Barrier/Hinge/Pivot of Yuan (Yuan Qi)

Precautions: Contraindicated point during pregnancy.

Location: On the midline of the abdomen, 3 cun below the umbilicus and 2 cun above the superior border of the pubic symphysis.


Front-Mu point of the Small Intestine, point of intersection of Spleen, Liver and Kidney channels with Renmai.


Tonifies Yuan Qi (Source Qi), nourishes and stabilizes the Kidneys, regulates the Qi and restores the Yang, tonifies and strengthens the body, prolongs life, according to some authors, Guanyuan corresponds to the location of the "Dantian" referred to in Daoist meditation and Qi Gong.

Primary Indications:

Menstrual disorders (irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhoea, amenorrhoea, uterine bleeding), vaginal discharge, post-partum lochia, spermatorrhoea, urinary frequency, retention of urine.

Tertiary Indications:

Enuresis, hernia, female infertility, general fatigue with emaciation, flaccid wind-stroke, uterine prolapse, lower abdominal pain, diarrhoea, tuberculosis, impotence, haematuria, nephritis, Lin Zheng.

Other Indications:

Prolonging life, mental disorders, menopausal hot flushes, uterine diseases, excess of debauchery, prostatitis, sensation of "a piglet running around in abdomen" and rising again to the heart, abdominal distension, subcutaneous oedema, dyspnoea due to Chongmai disorder, pelveoperitonitis, round worms in the intestinal tract, cholera, blood in the stool, subcostal tumours "like an inverted cup", headache and vertigo due to Wind, heart pains radiating to back, lassitude in four limbs following traumatic haemorrhage or due to disease caused by Cold or Wind, orchitis, metritis.
