CO4 (Colon 4) - Acupuncture Point Information

Chinese Name: Hegu
English Name: Enclosed Valley; Adjoining Valleys.

Precautions: Acupuncture and moxibustion on this point are contraindicated during pregnancy.

Location: Between the 1st and 2nd metacarpals, in the middle of the radial side of the 2nd metacarpal bone.

Nature:

Yuan-Source point of the Colon channel.

Functions:

Disperses Wind, relieves Exterior conditions, eliminates Wind-Heat, suppresses pain, activates the dispersing function of Lungs, relieves stagnation in the intestines, activates the intestinal function, inhibits peristalsis of the stomach/relaxes its spasms and pyloric sphincter, THE point for all facial symptoms, "For mouth and face Hegu is ace" (from the Four Dominant Points Song), for diseases of the sensory organs.

Primary Indications:

Headache, epistaxis, deafness, toothache, facial swelling, facial paralysis, sore throat.

Secondary Indications:

Febrile diseases, excessive sweating.

Tertiary Indications:

Redness/swelling and pain of eye, contracture of fingers, pain in arm, pain in general, trismus, amenorrhoea, delayed labour, abortion, abdominal pain, constipation, dysentry, skin disorders (wind rash, scabies, ding boil), nebula, pain in shoulder and back, common cold, nasal polyps, hemiplegia.

Other Indications:

Cough, asthma, nasosinusitis, neuraesthenia, insomnia, mumps, infantile convulsions, tinnitus, pain in gums and tongue, thick coating covering tongue, visual problems.
